Teen Guitarist Nene Royal Leaves AGT Judges Speechless After Explosive ‘Zombie’ Performance Earns Four Yeses

Nene Royal made a memorable first impression on America’s Got Talent by combining confident guitar playing with a powerful rock vocal performance that earned praise from all four judges. The teenage musician from Phuket, Thailand, auditioned just one day before her 16th birthday and advanced to the next round after receiving four yes votes from Sofía Vergara, Howie Mandel, Mel B, and Simon Cowell.

During her introduction, Royal shared her dream of becoming “a superstar touring the world.” To showcase both her singing and guitar skills, she chose to perform “Zombie,” one of the most iconic alternative rock songs of the 1990s, while her father watched proudly from backstage.

Originally released in 1994 by the Irish rock band The Cranberries, “Zombie” appeared on the group’s second studio album, No Need to Argue. Written by lead singer Dolores O’Riordan, the song was inspired by the 1993 Warrington bombings in England, which claimed the lives of two children during the conflict in Northern Ireland. Unlike many of the band’s earlier songs, “Zombie” features heavy distorted guitars and an aggressive vocal delivery, reflecting the anger and grief behind its lyrics. Over the years, it has become one of The Cranberries’ signature songs and remains a landmark in alternative rock history.

Royal’s rendition stayed faithful to the song’s rock foundation while adding her own youthful energy. Opening with an electric guitar, she maintained the driving rhythm throughout the performance before moving confidently into the song’s demanding vocal passages. Rather than attempting to imitate Dolores O’Riordan’s distinctive voice, Royal focused on delivering the song with her own tone, balancing strong vocals with consistent guitar work. Her performance emphasized authenticity over perfection, allowing both her musicianship and stage presence to stand out.

Before appearing on America’s Got Talent, Royal had already built a significant online following. She taught herself guitar by watching online tutorials and began playing at the age of seven. Over the years, she has shared guitar performances and singing videos across social media, where she has accumulated more than three million followers. Her AGT audition introduced that talent to a much broader television audience.

The judges responded enthusiastically to her performance. Sofía Vergara described it as “spectacular” and told Royal she had a strong chance of doing well in the competition. Howie Mandel praised her unexpected rock style and called her “a rock star.” Mel B highlighted the combination of her vocal ability and guitar playing, describing the pairing as a natural fit. Simon Cowell focused on the authenticity of her voice, adding that the slightly rough, unpolished aspects of the performance made it feel even more genuine and engaging.

Receiving four yeses secured Royal’s place in the next stage of the competition, although her journey in Season 21 has yet to unfold. Her audition stood out not simply because of her age, but because she successfully blended instrumental skill with confident vocals on a challenging rock classic. By choosing a song with emotional depth and a demanding musical arrangement, she demonstrated versatility and composure on one of television’s biggest talent-show stages.

Whether Royal continues deep into the competition remains to be seen, but her audition established her as one of the season’s notable young performers. Her combination of self-taught guitar skills, growing stage confidence, and respect for a classic rock anthem left both the judges and viewers eager to see what she performs next.
