New Autopsy Details in Ethan Browne’s Death

Eight months after the passing of Ethan Browne, son of legendary singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has released new findings about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Incident

Ethan, 52, was found unresponsive in his Culver City home on November 25, 2025. First responders discovered him in his bedroom holding a straw and lighter, surrounded by narcotics, prescription medications, and drug paraphernalia including “whip-it” cartridges. A glass pipe with crystalline residue and burnt foil were also found nearby.

His roommate recalled seeing him the night before, noting he “seemed off” and possibly under the influence. Ethan was last seen alive around 10:30 p.m.

Cause of Death

The autopsy confirmed Ethan died accidentally from the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and lidocaine. Toxicology reports showed no alcohol in his system.

Life and Legacy

Ethan was the eldest son of Jackson Browne and model-actress Phyllis Major, who tragically died of a barbiturate overdose in 1976. Browne later wrote “The Only Child” for Ethan, reflecting on grief and resilience.

Ethan pursued a career in modeling and acting, appearing in films like Hackers and Raising Helen, as well as the WB series Birds of Prey. He also founded Spinside Records, contributing to the music industry beyond his father’s legacy.

Jackson Browne announced his son’s death the following day, writing: “It is with deep sorrow that we share that on the morning of November 25, 2025, Ethan Browne was found unresponsive in his home and has passed away. We ask for privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time.”

Ethan’s death echoes the tragic loss of his mother decades earlier, marking another painful chapter in the Browne family’s history.
