A family country trio known as The Sound earned enthusiastic applause during their audition for America’s Got Talent, but Simon Cowell believes the group will need to take greater creative risks if they hope to make a deep run in the competition.
The trio, made up of a father and his two sons from Romeo, Michigan, appeared during the seventh round of Season 21 auditions, airing on NBC on July 21. Although their performance received a standing ovation from both the audience and most of the judging panel, Cowell offered constructive criticism, describing the audition as “very safe.”

For their audition, The Sound chose “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” one of the most recognizable songs in American popular music.
Originally written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver, the song was released by John Denver in 1971 as the lead single from his album Poems, Prayers & Promises. It became one of Denver’s signature hits, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and growing into an enduring country-folk anthem. Over the decades, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” has been covered by artists across multiple genres and remains closely associated with themes of home, family, and rural America.
Rather than simply recreating the original recording, The Sound opened their audition with an a cappella arrangement, inviting the audience to clap along before gradually introducing their instruments. The stripped-down opening emphasized the trio’s vocal harmonies, allowing each family member’s voice to blend naturally before the performance expanded into a fuller country arrangement.

The group’s harmony quickly became the standout feature of the audition. Throughout the performance, audience members responded enthusiastically, cheering as the arrangement built in energy. After what many believed was the ending, judges Mel B and Sofia Vergara even stood up to applaud before realizing the trio had planned one final a cappella section to close the performance.
The creative ending surprised both the audience and the judges, adding a memorable moment to an otherwise traditional rendition of the classic song.
Mel B was among the group’s strongest supporters. Although she admitted she is not usually a fan of country music, she praised The Sound for changing her perspective, saying their harmonies were “perfection” and that the performance made her happy. She also shared a lighthearted exchange with the father, joking that he had chosen the coolest instrument by playing the bass guitar.
Howie Mandel also enjoyed the performance, humorously noting that the false ending briefly fooled even members of the production crew, who appeared ready to begin clearing the stage before the trio resumed singing.
Sofia Vergara described the audition as “perfect” and predicted that American audiences would quickly embrace the family band’s warm chemistry and approachable style.
Simon Cowell, however, offered a more measured evaluation. While acknowledging that the trio was highly likable and possessed strong musical ability, he suggested that choosing such a well-known and straightforward song limited the overall impact of the audition.
Cowell explained that selecting a familiar classic was a safe decision, arguing that the greatest risk in a talent competition is failing to stand out creatively. Looking ahead, he encouraged the trio to move beyond traditional song choices if they advance to the next round.
Rather than performing another standard country favorite, Cowell suggested they consider taking a song from another genre and transforming it into a country arrangement. Such an approach, he argued, would allow the group to showcase not only their vocal harmonies but also their originality and musical creativity.

His comments reflected a recurring theme on America’s Got Talent, where technical skill alone is often not enough to reach the later stages of the competition. Contestants are also expected to surprise audiences and demonstrate artistic growth from one performance to the next.
For The Sound, their audition successfully introduced viewers to a talented family act with polished harmonies and genuine chemistry. Whether they can build on that foundation by taking Cowell’s advice and delivering a more unexpected performance may determine how far they advance in the competition.
