A father and his two sons, performing as The Sound, earned one of the loudest reactions of the night on America’s Got Talent with their emotional version of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

The family trio appeared during the July 21 episode of AGT Season 21, where acts from across the country are competing for the show’s $1 million grand prize.

Before singing, the group introduced themselves as Rob, Levi, and Jacob Mills. The three are originally from Romeo, Michigan, and now live in Nashville, Tennessee. Rob told the judges he raised his sons on classic country music, and that shared love of traditional songs helped shape their sound.

The audition began with the audience clapping along as the trio launched into the famous chorus a cappella. Their close harmonies and relaxed stage presence quickly grabbed the attention of both the crowd and the judges.

The performance received a standing ovation from Howie Mandel and Mel B, while Mel B called the harmonies “perfection.”

Sofia Vergara was equally impressed and predicted that “America is going to fall in love with you.”

Simon Cowell praised the quality of the vocals and the family connection on stage, though he said the performance felt “safe and nice.” He encouraged the trio to take bigger creative risks if they continue in the competition.

In the end, all four judges voted yes, sending The Sound through to the next round.

The group has already built a strong following online. In May 2025, they started posting videos of themselves singing in a hotel stairwell, and the series quickly went viral. Their combined social media audience has grown to nearly one million followers, and the stairwell videos have reportedly received more than 100 million views.

Levi Mills said the response showed them that many people still value “family, faith, and good music.”

“We live in a fast paced world,” he said. “It’s refreshing to slow down and appreciate the simple things. That’s what we’re doing.”

Their AGT audition may have started with a familiar country classic, but it ended with something much bigger: a room full of people singing along and a family band taking a major step forward on one of television’s biggest stages.
