Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has finally explained the story behind the finger point that became one of the WNBA’s biggest viral moments, and she admits she can’t believe it turned into such a sensation.

Speaking on the June 27 episode of her Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham walked listeners through exactly what happened during Indiana’s June 22 game against the Phoenix Mercury, saying the exchange began after a disagreement over technical fouls involving teammate Caitlin Clark and Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner.

According to Cunningham, she approached the officials because she felt the calls were inconsistent.

She explained that Bonner had done “something extra,” yet only Clark was assessed a technical foul. Cunningham said she simply wanted to know why Bonner hadn’t received the same penalty if Clark was going to be called.

As she pointed while talking to the referee, Bonner reacted by telling her not to point at her.

Cunningham laughed while recalling the moment, saying that hearing Bonner’s response only made her keep going.

She recreated the now famous gesture on the podcast before admitting she never even said anything during the exchange.

“I didn’t say a word,” Cunningham said while mimicking the finger point.

Looking back, she couldn’t help but laugh at herself.

“So stupid! Like, that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”

Even though she now thinks the moment was ridiculous, Cunningham admitted there was one reason she kept pointing.

“I think it was so dumb,” she said. “But it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself. I could not. She was losing her s***, and all I was doing was literally pointing.”

Her willingness to poke fun at herself has only made the viral clip even more entertaining for fans, many of whom have continued turning the gesture into memes across social media.

Cunningham and Bonner have history

The exchange also carried more meaning than many viewers realized.

Most Indiana Fever fans remember that Cunningham and Bonner were teammates during the 2025 season before Bonner stepped away from the team, requested a trade and was eventually released roughly six weeks into the regular season.

Their connection actually goes back even further.

Both players were members of the Phoenix Mercury during the 2019 season, Cunningham’s rookie year and Bonner’s 10th consecutive season with the franchise before she departed for the Connecticut Sun in 2020.

Neither player has publicly discussed what their relationship was like in Phoenix, but their shared history, combined with Bonner’s brief and turbulent stint in Indiana, has fueled speculation that there is lingering tension between them.

Whether that was a factor or not, the latest incident has added another chapter to their rivalry.

Fans won’t have to wait long for another meeting, either. The Fever and Mercury are scheduled to face each other again on July 9 in Phoenix, where plenty of attention is likely to be focused on Cunningham and Bonner after their now famous finger-pointing exchange.
