Taylor Swift’s Wedding Day Was Filled With Happiness Before Heartbreaking News Hours Later Cast a Shadow Over the Celebration

Taylor Swift’s wedding day was filled with joy, but it was also marked by heartbreaking news as someone who played an important role in her early life passed away just hours after she said “I do.”

On Friday, July 3, the 36 year old singer married Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, also 36, during an emotional ceremony at New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Friends and family watched as the couple exchanged vows, with guests later describing the ceremony as deeply moving.

The celebration came about 10 months after Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in August 2025. Their marriage was confirmed when giant purple screens outside Madison Square Garden lit up with the message, “JUST&T MARRIED!”, shortly after the bride arrived at the venue.

While the newlyweds celebrated with loved ones, another significant chapter in Swift’s life quietly came to an end.

Kirk Schwabe, the former teacher who later became one of Swift’s trusted bodyguards, died the same day at the age of 69 after battling renal cancer.

Schwabe taught at Henderson High School in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was one of Swift’s teachers between 2004 and 2006. As her music career quickly gained momentum, he left teaching in 2009 to join her security team, remaining a trusted presence as her fame continued to grow.

His wife, Janet Schwabe, confirmed his death to The Telegraph. She said he cared for Swift “like he did his daughters,” reflecting the close relationship they built over the years.

Their daughter, Sarah Schwabe, also shared a heartfelt tribute to her father, saying he had a unique gift for making people feel “seen, valued and protected.”

“Whether you were family, one of his students or someone like Taylor whose path crossed his, he cared deeply about people,” she said. “That’s the legacy he leaves behind.”

Swift had previously honored Schwabe in a subtle but meaningful way. In her appearance in the 2010 romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, the teacher character was named Mr. Schwabe, a tribute to the mentor who had supported her during her teenage years.

Shortly before Swift’s wedding, Schwabe also reflected on watching her rise from student to global superstar during an interview with The Telegraph. He recalled telling the young singer that she was destined for something extraordinary.

“This is not fun and games no more. You are it,” he remembered telling her, encouraging her to embrace the opportunities ahead. He also said he believed “the sky’s the limit” for her career.

Speaking about her relationship with Kelce, Schwabe shared that he trusted Swift’s judgment and believed she had found the right partner.

Following the ceremony, the newlyweds hosted a lavish reception inside Madison Square Garden. Reports described the celebration as blending elements inspired by Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, with interactive games, luxury raffle prizes, and personalized details throughout the evening.

The wedding drew a long list of celebrity guests, including Ed Sheeran, Karlie Kloss, Dakota Johnson, Bradley Cooper, Zoë Kravitz, Erin Andrews, Matthew Stafford, and Graham Norton. Other stars, including Hugh Grant, Chris Rock, and Tom Brady, were seen leaving earlier in the night, while many guests continued celebrating into the early morning hours.

For Swift, the day will likely be remembered as one of the happiest moments of her life, but also one forever connected to the loss of a mentor, protector, and longtime friend who believed in her long before the world did.
