The Sound looked like they had delivered a flawless America’s Got Talent audition until an unexpected moment near the end of their performance left everyone, including the judges, surprised.

The Michigan based family trio, made up of father Rob Mills and sons Levi and Jacob, took the AGT stage on Tuesday night with a heartfelt country gospel version of John Denver’s classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Their rich harmonies immediately won over both the audience and judges Mel B, Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and Sofía Vergara.

As the performance built, the entire theater joined in. Audience members clapped to the beat while Vergara and Cowell quietly sang along from the judges’ table.

Then came a dramatic pause.

Believing the song had reached its emotional finale, much of the audience jumped to its feet and erupted into applause. The pause also appeared to fool someone backstage, as a crew member hurried onto the stage, seemingly preparing to remove microphones and reset for the next act.

The Sound, however, wasn’t finished.

Without missing a beat, the family launched into one final soaring chorus of “Country Roads,” catching both the audience and the production crew off guard.

The unexpected mix up became one of the night’s funniest moments and did not go unnoticed by the judges.

Mel B reacted instantly with a surprised “Oh!” before sharing how much the performance had won her over.

“I’m not really that big of a fan of country music,” she admitted. “But this made me so happy. Your harmonies were just perfection.”

Howie Mandel also referenced the premature entrance from the stage crew.

“What I loved at the end is you held that note so long that our crew came out and was about to take you off the stage,” Mandel joked. “I loved it. Thank you.”

Sofía Vergara was equally enthusiastic, saying the trio had everything she looks for in an act.

“That was amazing,” she said. “I love country music. That song is one of my favorites. You guys being a family, the voices, everything was perfect. I think America’s going to fall in love with you. I think the audience already did, and I fell in love with you.”

Simon Cowell also praised the family but encouraged them to take bigger creative risks if they advance.

“I think everyone’s going to like you. I mean, how can you not?” Cowell said.

Still, he felt the audition played it a little too safe.

“That was obviously a very safe, nice audition,” he explained. “That’s the riskiest thing you can do. If you make it through to the next round, I’d like to hear you take a song and turn it into a country song. Going forward, we have to go beyond the safe.”

Despite his reservations, Cowell ultimately joined the other judges in voting yes.

With four yes votes, The Sound officially advanced to the next stage of the competition.

The episode ended with the judges facing one of their toughest tasks yet as they reviewed every successful audition from Season 21. After sending roughly 100 acts through from auditions, they now must narrow the field to just 44 performers for the live shows.

Host Terry Crews reminded the panel that 10 of those spots have already been claimed by Golden Buzzer winners, leaving only 34 remaining places.

NBC also teased that the new Judges’ Callbacks round will begin in two weeks, giving selected contestants one more chance to impress before the live shows officially kick off.
