The Voice UK is preparing for a major change ahead of its 15th series, but the departure of veteran coach Sir Tom Jones has already sparked a strong reaction from fans. More than 63,000 people have signed a petition calling for the Welsh music legend to return, raising questions about whether the singing competition can maintain its appeal without one of its most familiar faces.

Jones was part of the original coaching line-up when The Voice UK launched in 2012, appearing alongside Jessie J, Danny O’Donoghue and Will.i.am. Although he took a break in 2016, he returned for the sixth series and remained a central figure on the programme for years.
The singer recently told his Instagram followers that he had been removed from the show after being offered a significantly reduced role, which he was unhappy with. His departure prompted superfan Aaron Howlett, from Kingston-upon-Hull, to launch a petition urging ITV to reinstate him.
Howlett argued that Jones remains an exceptional performer and is a major reason audiences tune in. The campaign has attracted considerable support, with fellow coach Will.i.am even sharing the petition on Instagram.
ITV, meanwhile, thanked Jones for his contribution to the programme, praising the countless memorable moments he had helped create. A spokesperson confirmed that he would no longer serve as a full-time coach in the upcoming series but said discussions were continuing with the singer and his team about possible future involvement.
Jones will not be the only familiar presence missing when the competition returns. Emma Willis, who presented the programme for 12 series, is moving to BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. She will be replaced by presenters Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon, marking another significant change for the long-running show.
The coaching panel is also being refreshed. Will.i.am will return alongside former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland, while former Girls Aloud member Cheryl and rapper Aitch will join the line-up. The new combination brings together established music stars and performers from different generations, potentially giving the competition a different dynamic.
However, the response to Jones’s departure demonstrates the lasting connection some viewers have with the show’s original personalities. For longtime fans, his experience, distinctive voice and interactions with fellow coaches have become an important part of the programme’s identity.
Whether the new panel can win over audiences remains to be seen. A refreshed line-up could introduce new energy and attract viewers interested in the incoming coaches, but replacing a familiar figure with more than a decade of history on the show is a significant challenge.
With a petition continuing to draw support and Will.i.am publicly backing the campaign, Jones’s future association with The Voice UK remains a talking point. ITV has left open the possibility of further involvement, although no specific role has been confirmed.
The upcoming series will therefore face two tests: introducing a new era for the competition while reassuring viewers who feel that Jones’s presence is difficult to replace. Whether the changes prove successful will ultimately depend on the new coaches, the contestants and how audiences respond when the show returns.
