Kelly Clarkson scored one of the biggest moments of The Voice Season 30 Battle Rounds when she used her Steal to rescue Marcus Ladden Jr. after Queen Latifah chose Chari as the winner of their powerhouse duet. The decision gave Clarkson another promising young artist for her team and turned the final performance of the October 13 episode into a dramatic finish.
The two-night Battle Round continued with coaches Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah, Adam Levine and Riley Green facing difficult decisions as their contestants competed for places in the next stage. Each pairing delivered a different musical challenge, but the evening’s final showdown proved particularly memorable.

Marcus Ladden Jr. and Chari Deliver a Standout Duet
The episode concluded with Marcus Ladden Jr., a 19-year-old member of Team Queen, facing Chari, a four-chair turn, in a performance of “On My Own,” originally recorded by Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald. The pairing carried extra significance because LaBelle was serving as Latifah’s advisor for the Battles.
Both singers impressed the coaches with their vocal abilities, although their contrasting styles gave the performance its distinctive character. Riley Green praised their vocals, while Clarkson highlighted Marcus’ impressive runs and Chari’s effortless delivery.
Adam Levine also commended Marcus for rising to the challenge against a formidable opponent. While Chari’s talent was already expected after her four-chair turn in the Blind Auditions, Marcus managed to make a strong impression of his own.
Latifah ultimately selected Chari to advance. She praised both contestants but felt Chari had earned the opportunity to continue, leaving Marcus vulnerable to elimination.
Clarkson, however, was not ready to let him go.
Kelly Clarkson Uses Her Steal to Rescue Marcus

After Latifah announced her decision, Clarkson pressed her Steal button, securing Marcus for Team Kelly. The move gave the young singer another chance to compete, despite losing his original Battle.
Explaining her decision, Clarkson praised Marcus as a complete performer, pointing to his range, tone and emotional delivery. She also acknowledged that the next stage of the competition would present a challenge, but clearly believed he had the potential to keep growing.
The steal was particularly meaningful because Marcus had faced a strong competitor in Chari. Rather than allowing his journey to end with the Battle, Clarkson saw qualities worth developing and gave him a second opportunity.
The moment also underscored how unpredictable the Battle Rounds can be. Winning a performance is not the only way for contestants to remain in the competition, as coaches can use their Steals to bring eliminated singers onto their own teams.
More Difficult Decisions Across the Battle Rounds
Marcus and Chari were not the only contestants facing tough choices during the October 13 episode.
Queen Latifah opened the night with Bigcountry and Luke Cope performing Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey.” Despite praise for both singers, Latifah chose Bigcountry to advance.
On Team Kelly, Anna McElroy defeated Johnnie Kapua after their rendition of Teddy Swims and Maren Morris’ “Some Things I’ll Never Know.” Riley Green also had to choose between Brendan Coulter and Keiyana Osmond after they performed Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved,” ultimately advancing Keiyana.
Meanwhile, Adam Levine selected Evan James over Luke Curran following their performance of Tucker Wetmore’s “Wind Up Missin’ You.” Clarkson later chose Nina Howland over Hazel Gerson after the two performed Sia’s “Breathe Me.”
The episode also resolved the previous night’s cliffhanger involving Kayleigh Matthews. After both Clarkson and Green attempted to steal her, Matthews chose to join Team Riley.
With Marcus now joining Clarkson’s roster, the competition is entering another demanding stage. The singer has earned a second chance, but he will need to keep delivering strong performances as the remaining artists prepare for Cut Week.
